Brief History of the Icelandic Language

Icelandic is a Germanic language that is primarily spoken in Iceland. It has historical roots in Norse, which was spoken in Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland) since the Middle Ages. It is a Scandinavian language just like Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Faroese, however it is not mutually intelligible like the three “continental languages” (Danish, Swedish and Norwegian). Iceland has a population of 276,000 people who almost all speak Icelandic. Today, Icelandic is spoken by over 300,000 people worldwide.
