Brief History of the Danish Language

Danish is a North Germanic (Scandinavian) language that is close to Norwegian and Swedish.

Danish is the official language of Denmark and the Faroe Islands (alongside Faroese) and is generally understood in Sweden and Norway.

In Denmark, the population is almost entirely linguistically homogeneous, with 92% of citizens identifying Danish as their mother tongue.

Denmark has a small minority population of 23,000 German speakers in the south. This region is called North Schleswig, or West Jutland. It has a population of 250,000 people, 9% of which are German. Some 8,000 Germans living in Denmark still use German on a daily basis.
