Brief History of the Persian/Farsi Language

With 75 million speakers worldwide, Persian is the most widely spoken Iranian language within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European family of languages. Persian is spoken in Iran (over 60 million speakers), Afghanistan (16 million speakers), Tajikistan, Bahrain and Uzbekistan. It is the official language of Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Contrary to popular belief, Iran is not an Arab-speaking country: only 2% of its population names Arab as its first language. Modern Persian does, however, use Arabic writing and borrows several Arabic words.
