Brief History of the Finnish Language

Finnish (Suomi in Finnish) belongs to the Finnic branch of the Uralic language family. With 5 million speakers, Finnish is the second most widely spoken Finno-Ugric language after Hungarian. It belongs to the same sub-family as Estonian and many other disappearing languages, such as Livonian, Votic, Ingrian, and Veps. Lappic, which is only spoken by about 3,000 people in Finland (much less than in Sweden and Norway), is also a Finno-Ugric language.

Finnish is spoken in all of Finland and in the independent republic of Karelia in Russia, where it has an official status. Finnish is the mother tongue of 93% of the Finnish population and 70,000 Karelians.

The Finnish Constitution has also granted bilingual status to the 8% (3,000 people) of the population whose mother tongue is Swedish.
