Brief History of the Gujarati Language

Native to India, Gujarati (or goudjarātī, goudjarati; local name: gujarātī, ગુજરાતી [guɟəɾa:t̪i]) is an Indo-Iranian language of the greater Indo-European language family. There are approximately 46 million Gujarati speakers in the world, primarily in the Western Indian state of Gujarat.

Gujarat is derived from Prakrit and Rajasthani, which is an official language under the federal Constitution. Muslim and Farsi speakers have added a large number of Persian and Arabic words to its lexicon.
